Graduate students needed for theoretical research projects in the subject area of the history of the universe (Cosmology)

Main subjects:

Formation of the first stars in the universe: A hot topic in cosmology is the study of the conditions during the era of the formation of the first galaxies. Using theoretical models it is possible to predict new phenomena that may be soon confirmed using new telescopes. One central topic is the ionization and heating of the gas throughout the universe by starlight from early galaxies.
21-cm Cosmology: A new observational field is now being launched: at least five international teams are constructing new radio telescopes, in order to detect and study the radiation that was emitted from hydrogen in the early universe at a wavelength of 21 cm. These measurements will teach us about cosmic reionization, the first galaxies, the primordial density distribution in the universe, and more.

In these areas, several research styles are available: Theoretical model building, analysis of results from large computer simulations, analysis of real results from telescopes, or comparison and fitting among all of these.

Successful students are guaranteed excellent funding throughout their studies.

Postdoctoral fellowships in cosmology are available for working with Prof. Rennan Barkana (starting date and length of position are flexible). Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in astronomy or physics by the date of appointment. There are no restrictions on citizenship.

The following areas of research are preferred: Formation of the first stars and quasars, reionization and 21-cm cosmology, galaxy formation, large-scale structure, and gravitational lensing. Projects are available involving theoretical study as well as modeling of numerical simulation results and observational data.

Applications should preferably arrive by December 31, but later applications may be considered if positions are still available. The application should include a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a brief statement of current and future research, and at least three letters of recommendation (which may be sent in directly).
