Dr. Maxim Khodas Brookhaven National Lab Date: Jan. 11, 2009 Title: Collective dynamics of one-dimensional systems Abstract: I will start with the thorough introduction to experimental realizations of one dimensional systems. These realizations range from quantum nano-wires to molecular spin chains. The elementary excitations in one dimensional systems are discussed emphasizing the differences with higher dimensional interacting systems. The dynamical response of interacting fermions is similar to that of interacting bosons in one-dimension. In both cases the response is governed by the "shake up" processes of low-lying excitations. I finally conclude by making a comparison with extensive numerics as well as experimental results.
