Shulamit Goldhaber Colloquium Dr. Fabiola Gianotti CERN Date: Jan. 4, 2009 Title: Preparing for physics at the LHC with the ATLAS detector Abstract: The CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), one of the most ambitious projects in science ever, will deliver first proton-proton collisions in Summer 2009. I will review the main LHC physics goals, and the status of the accelerator and of the ATLAS experiment. I will then discuss a few examples of physics measurements that can be performed with the very first data in 2009-2010.
