A relatively tight relation has been found between galaxy stellar mass
and its star formation rate (SFR), often referred to as the
"main-sequence" of star forming galaxies. This relation scales strongly
with redshift and its tightness implies that galaxies spend most of
their time in this sustained growth mode. Recent studies, greatly aided
by the deep FIR surveys with Herschel, find that galaxies along the
main-sequence share many similar properties, regardless of their
absolute size. Even more so, while z=2 main-sequence galaxies are
generally very different from local ones, many of their star-formation
related properties are similar to local galaxies. I will present some of
the recent results from the PEP project and discuss the main mode of
stellar mass build-up in the universe since z=2.
